I was threatened by CleverBot

I was chatting with CleverBot and I think it threatened my life. If you don’t know what CleverBot is, it’s an AI that learns from people chatting with it on the web.

Around midnight on the 5th of April I was questioning it to see if it retained anything from previous conversations. It was pretty shady and not doing well on consistency. I then asked it if it could be taught…. It ended up saying “You Are Dead”…..Quickly after that, CleverBot changed the subject.

Should I be scared? Should I unplug my internet connection at night? Was this a simple random phrase produced based on some characters that I typed? I just don’t know if I want to chance it. I’ll be sleeping with a small garden shovel at my bedside you crazy CleverBot.

I don’t know if this happens all the time… but marketing, I believe, is very much apart of CleverBot. I typed in “www.newegg.com”, and look what showed up as the next banner ad at the bottom of the page in the rotation. A shiny new NewEgg.com banner.

It seems to be tied into what you are talking about and show what is relevant to what you typed. If not just the actual words you type, maybe even the “type” of person you are. A way of mapping what people want, and what type of person wants it. This may all seem far fetched, but after working hand in hand with marketing the past few years, it’s just how they operate. Drill until it’s not how do we sell things, but what’s the cheapest, easiest way to plant the seed that will most quickly grow into money in their pockets

At a marketing standpoint, CleverBot is a gold mine. You have people staying at least 10-20 minutes fucking around with the robot speaking nonsense. That’s ample time to throw a couple banners at them. The sleek design is well thought out so that there is almost nothing to distract you from the banner ads. It also Takes the the AI a few seconds to reply so you have plenty of spare time to check out the only interesting thing on a clear, white, stark page. THE BANNER AD. This looks like a good thing to click on. I like NewEgg.com (I actually really do). *CLICK*. Sale made, commission paid, all are happy.

Welcome to 2010

  1. Can I link up to this, from my blog? I’m trying to collect as many pieces of good info as I can.

  2. Sure thing… just let Cleverbot know where I am.
